Professor Atish Dabholkar
Director, ICTP

“The International Nathiagali Summer College (INSC) and the ICTP share a common vision and mission, which is not surprising since both take inspiration from ICTP's founding director, Professor Abdus Salam. ICTP was established to end the intellectual isolation of scientists in the developing world so they could contribute at the frontiers of science. Recognizing the growing global need, Salam envisioned a complementary initiative in Pakistan—to bring leading international scientists to lecture, foster collaboration, and stimulate scientific growth locally. Thus, INSC was launched in 1976 and has been held annually since. ICTP has proudly supported INSC through the years, alongside the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission and later the National Centre for Physics (NCP), itself inspired by early discussions at INSC and modeled after ICTP. This 50th edition is a significant milestone, reflecting the impact INSC has had—benefiting over 10,000 carefully selected scientists, including around 10% from 75 developing countries, and hosting nearly 1,000 lecturers. On behalf of ICTP, I extend my warmest congratulations to INSC. As our sister institution, it continues to embody our shared mission: making advanced science accessible to the global scientific community.”

"The INSC's strength lies in its carefully chosen scientific themes and the presence of a stellar faculty. Notably, Professor Abdus Salam inaugurated the first meeting with a lecture titled 'Probing into the Heart of Matter,' a reflection of his focus on fundamental physics. He was followed by Dr. Benjamin W. Lee of Fermilab, whose lectures on electroweak theory and heavy quark physics became foundational material for many. Among the most memorable contributors was Nobel Laureate Professor Samuel Ting. His lectures on the Mark J collaboration and the discovery of gluons were groundbreaking and inspired a new wave of experimental high-energy physics in Pakistan. His visit also led to opportunities for young Pakistani scientists to join his research group at DESY and later at CERN, where they contributed to the L3 and CMS experiments, culminating in the discovery of the Higgs Boson. The INSC’s role in developing Pakistan’s international scientific collaborations is undeniable. From the early L3 collaboration to Pakistan’s associate membership in CERN, the impact of INSC in shaping and enabling scientific excellence has been profound."

"It has been my privilege to contribute to the scientific direction of the INSC at the invitation of Prof. Riazuddin and Dr. Ishfaq Ahmad. As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of this extraordinary institution, I extend my heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to its current leadership, Dr. Raja Ali Raza Anwar and Dr. Shafqat Karim, for continuing this proud legacy."

Prof Galileo Violini
Prof. Galileo Violini
Director Emeritus, Centro Internacional de Física

Participant of the 2nd International Nathiagali Summer College, 1977. Message sent on the Occasion of the 50th INSC: "The unforgettable experience at Nathiagali exceeded all expectations. Beyond the scientific discussions I had hoped for, including on the latest developments in our research, I found personal enrichment. I had the unexpected pleasure of playing bridge with a namesake of the caliber of Leo Esaki. I also deepened my friendship with Remo Ruffini, with whom I had shared the first years of our undergraduate studies. Our conversations even led to an interdisciplinary article, co-authored with a Pakistani colleague Prof. Qadir. Discussions at the College went far beyond advanced physics lectures delivered by world-class scientists. Particularly memorable were those given by Remo and by a future Nobel laureate, Pierre-Gilles de Gennes. Naturally, conversations also addressed “contemporary needs”. The Nathiagali Summer College's role as a catalyst for so many unexpected developments deserve recognition, and, needless to say, so does the vision, passion, and leadership of Abdus Salam."

Prof Ken Peach
Ken Peach
Emeritus Professor, University of Oxford and University of Edinburgh

Faculty member 37th INSC: "Apart from Pakistan’s accelerator programme, contributing to international facilities like SESAME and CERN, and taking its place in the international scientific community, I noted that the College was important in helping develop highly qualified people, in Pakistan and elsewhere, committed to advancing science and improving life. This was close to Salam’s heart. I quote from the citation on the award of the 1989 Edinburgh Medal to Abdus Salam (which I remember attending) “especially his continuing efforts to ensure that the benefits of co-operative scientific endeavors are not denied to the scientific workers in the poorer countries of this world”. The INSC is an essential part of that mission, and the Salam Lecture is an embodiment of that ambition."

Former Head of Unit and Counselor (Commission of the European Union)

Participant of 1976-77 INSC, Message sent on the Occasion of the 50th INSC: "So fruitful were for my professional life those first two Nathiagali Summer Colleges—places where friendships, ideas, and scientific cooperation were nurtured and flourished. Among the prominent lecturers in the Nathiagali Summer Colleges, I may mention Roger Penrose (Nobel 2020), Remo Ruffini (lecturer in 1976 and 1977) and Gilles de Gennes (Nobel 1991). Some participants delivered seminars such as Violini on dispersion relations, me on neutron transport theory (1976) and on environmental radiology (1977) and several of us wrote texts on teaching science in national languages. I must also mention Dr. Abdul Moyeen Khan, a participant in 1976 who later became a minister in Bangladesh. We met again at ICTP and collaborated during the International Conference on the Energy Problem. I later invited him to the European Commission as well."

Excerpts from the letter (dated 10 September, 1976): "On behalf of the Agency and the Director General of UNESCO, I would like to express most sincere appreciation of the Government of Pakistan for the excellent arrangements made for the holding of the Summer College Physics and Contemporary Needs in which 100 participants from 31 countries participated. The hospitality offered by your Government and, in particular, the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission, was most favourably commented upon by lecturers and participants alike. 1 believe that such joint ventures between the International Centre for Theoretical Physics and the organizations concerned will be of value in the development of physics research as related to the needs of developing countries and very much hope that means will be found for ocher such collaborative ventures in the future."

Message on the occasion of the 10th Summer College: "It gives me great happiness to greet the participants of the Tenth Nathiagali College. When the idea of the College was mooted in 1976, one hoped and prayed, but it was by no means clear, that the College would be held with this regularity, every year for one decade, nor that it would attract such international renown and standing. For this, credit goes to the Atomic Energy Commission and its Chairman. As it is now, Nathiagali College is the most consistently run college of the highest reputation in the entire sub-continent. Besides raising the Level of physics in Pakistan, and bringing highly renowned physicists to Pakistan with whom Pakistani physicists have been able to keep in contact, we can take pride that the College has served the physics and mathematics communities from neighbouring countries. For the future, I pray that I am able to send a similar message of congratulations after the College has completed its second decade of existence. We had originally planned that the College would be accompanied by a major research workshop lasting at least two months. I hope that during the second decade this idea also comes into fruition. Once again, I wish to send to all the participants my warmest wishes for a very successful period of intensive exposure to new and exciting ideas in physics and that the College truly lives up to its title of 'Physics and Contemporary Needs.'
